- V.42 changes the modem to modem connect from 10 bit/byte to ~8.3
- bits/byte, and provides flow control. I don't have the figurres on
- MNP, but I believe it is similar. Using hardware flow control
- without error correction doesn't work right, and I believe the
- manual says EC must be used to have hardware flow control used,
- regardless of bits set.

- Turning off V.42 to use MNP is a good idea with some modems, since
- they may have a less complete implementation of the protocol, or use
- block sizes USR doesn't support, or whatever. I think turning off Ec
- completely may be part of your problem, the need for retrain is
- missed, the IP protocol generates retries, etc. I'm guessing, but
- these are educated guesses.
